The National Eye Institute (a division of NIH — the U.S. National Institutes of Health) conducted two Age-Related Eye Disease Studies (AREDS1 and AREDS2) starting in 2001. The studies found that a specific combination of nutrients that included Lutein and Zeaxanthin improved the eye health of aging patients. The AREDS2 study was completed in 2013. Today, the combination of eye vitamins used in that study have become the U.S. government standard of care for supporting aging eyes, especially in people with Age-Related Macular Degeneration.
